Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. Its origins lie in the will of physician, naturalist and collector Sir Hans Sloane who, over his lifetime (1660-1753), collected more than 71,000 objects, which he wished to be preserved after his death.
Over the centuries, the Museum has expanded both its collection and site. December 2000 saw the opening of the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court – with its spectacular glass and steel roof – which, at two acres, is the largest covered public space in Europe.
