Discover England’s Stately Homes

A look at a bespoke, tailor made tour visiting some of England’s historic landmarks.

One of the best parts of my work is the preparation and the research. In 2024 I was provided with a comprehensive list of stately homes and monuments and set a 10 day period to visit as many as we could on day trips from the London suburbs.

We left early on a wet rainy morning from West London, close to the River Thames and headed across the country to the heart of England with the plan for the day steeped in architectural grandeur and royal history. Our first port of call was Coughton Court, an 18th-century house surrounded by landscaped gardens, still home to the Throckmorton family (who have been in residence for over 600 years), and a symbol of Catholic resistance during Tudor times. In 2024 the property was subjected to a major restoration project undertaken by the National Trust, so having explored the interior, and having got close up and personal with a chandelier, (which had been lowered for cleaning) we headed off to Croome, Our last stop for the day was what felt like a private tour of Ashdown House, a stunning Dutch-style building with breathtaking views over the Berkshire and Oxfordshire countryside.

Day 2: Sussex – The South Coast’s Regal Charm (Sunday, 7th July 2024)

Explore the heart of Sussex, starting with a tour of the extravagant Brighton Pavilion, a seaside palace famed for its Indo-Saracenic architecture. Next, venture to Arundel Castle, a restored medieval fortress home to the Dukes of Norfolk. Wrap up the day with a stroll through the scenic gardens and art collections of **Petworth House**, one of England’s grandest estates.

Day 3: Isle of Wight – Victorian Elegance

On day three, sail to the Isle of Wight to explore two gems: **Osborne House**, Queen Victoria’s beloved summer retreat, and **Carisbrooke Castle**, famous for its association with Charles I. These iconic sites are filled with royal history, offering a glimpse into Victorian opulence and medieval intrigue.

Day 4: Wiltshire – Timeless Beauty in the English Countryside

Head to Wiltshire, beginning at **Dyrham Park**, a baroque mansion set amidst 270 acres of gardens. Then, discover the quaint beauty of **Great Chalfield Manor**, a 15th-century moated manor house, and the medieval village of **Lacock**, often used as a filming location due to its untouched charm.

Day 5: Wiltshire – Gardens, Temples, and Ancient Mysteries (Wednesday, 10th July 2024)

Day five takes you deeper into Wiltshire, starting with the awe-inspiring **Wilton House**, known for its stunning Palladian architecture. Next, visit **Stourhead**, one of the finest landscape gardens in England, before ending the day at **Avebury**, a prehistoric monument and one of the most significant stone circles in Europe, admired from the exterior.

Day 6: Hampshire – Noble Estates and Country Elegance (Thursday, 11th July 2024)

Discover Hampshire’s countryside estates, beginning with a visit to the famous **Highclere Castle**, better known as the filming location for *Downton Abbey*. Continue to **The Vyne**, a former Tudor palace with impressive gardens, and end the day at **Mottisfont**, a romantic riverside priory renowned for its rose gardens.

Day 7: Kent – Castles and Stately Homes (Friday, 12th July 2024)

Travel through Kent’s historic landmarks starting at **Bodiam Castle**, a 14th-century moated fortress that looks straight out of a fairy tale. Follow this with a visit to **Knole**, a vast stately home set in 1,000 acres of deer parkland and home to centuries of British history.

Day 8: Gloucester – Stately Elegance and Historic Homes (Saturday, 13th July 2024)

The tour continues with a visit to **Chastleton House**, an atmospheric Jacobean mansion. Next, explore **Newark Park**, a Tudor hunting lodge offering panoramic views of the Cotswold countryside, and conclude the day at **Stowe House**, famous for its landscaped gardens.

Day 9: Sussex – Literary and Historical Heritage (Sunday, 14th July 2024)

Return to Sussex for a visit to **Hurstmonceaux Castle**, a stunning brick-built fortress, followed by **Batemans**, the charming 17th-century home of writer Rudyard Kipling. The picturesque beauty and literary significance make this a perfect stop for history buffs and literature lovers alike.

Day 10: Dorset – A Finale of Architectural Splendor (Monday, 15th July 2024)

End your bespoke tour in Dorset, starting with **Kingston Lacy**, a lavish country mansion with an impressive collection of art. Finish with a visit to **Montacute House**, a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture, where the grand finale of your journey through England’s finest heritage awaits.
