From Southampton to Highclere takes about 50 minutes Set among 1000 acres of parkland and woods, Highclere is one of Britain’s finest Victorian buildings. The Carnarvon family (the 5th Earl, along with Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt in 1922) has lived here since the 17th century. The present house was, however, designed in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry who was also responsible for the Houses of Parliament in London. In the hugely popular TV series Downton Abbey, the Castle is used for the exterior shots and for much of the interior “upstairs” filming. Highclere can also be combined with Stonehenge instead of Windsor.
